This past Saturday, I learned just how spoiled I am.
My two oldest sons and I worked with others from our church to put together 100 sack lunches for some of the homeless men and women in our city.
The mission is to get a hot lunch (two hotdogs and some chips) to the people and then to provide them a “grab-and-go” lunch for later in the day. We helped with the “grab-and-go” sack lunches.
Each paper bag contained:
- Two bologna and cheese sandwiches
- 1 granola bar
- 1 large orange
- 1 packet of mustard
- 1 packet of mayo
It’s a lunch that some of us would frown at. Bologna? Where’s the ham? Where’s the turkey? Sliced thin from the deli. No tomatoes?
But you know what?
People line up each month for that simple lunch. And I wouldn’t be surprised if, for many of them, that would be their only meal for a few days.
A bologna sandwich isn’t much to many of us. But it is to them.
To fill those 100 or so sacks and feed 100 people cost about $200 for all the food, I believe.
We’re called by God to care for our brothers and sisters in need and to feed the hungry.
Look for opportunities this week to help. Be the hands and feet of Christ. A few bucks for a package of bologna and a loaf of bread is not much for many of us. But for the hungry, it fills their stomachs and helps them through another day.
