Church Marketing: Not-so-secret shopper

When was the last time you approached your church like a visitor?

If possible, schedule a time to “shop” your church’s frontline workers and volunteers. Do this to make sure your visitors have a welcoming experience.

Here are some steps to take:

Pull into the parking lot a few minutes before service.

Are there visitor spots available? Or are members parking in visitor spots?

Walk to the front door and observe.

Is the greeter doing his job? A firm handshake. Eye contact. A smile. A simple hello.

Step inside the door.

Are people inside greeting visitors? Engaging them? Escorting them to the sanctuary? Handing out bulletins?

Are visitors stopping by the coffee kiosk? Is there coffee available?

Go to the sanctuary.

Are seats available? Are members making room for visitors? Talking to them? Are visitors making it to a special visitor’s section?

Do they have a chance to meet the pastor?

As we know, there are no second chances to make first impressions. As church marketers, we need to make sure our visitors are getting the best our church can offer.

How much time and training do you devote to your church’s front-line experience?
