Church Marketing: Don’t “we we” on your prospects

Have you noticed churches that “we we” all over themselves?

You hear it in their conversations. You read the words on their websites.

  • We have a modern church.
  • We have a talented pastor.
  • We are very active in the community.
  • We have an incredible children’s program.
  • We have 10 adult Sunday School classes.
  • We have traditional worship, blended worship, and contemporary worship.
  • We have a vibrant college ministry.

OKAY, I GET IT….YOU’RE AWESOME!

But how can I plug in to your church?

The whole “we have” and “we are” conversations are easy. And people get what you’re saying. But when you have the opportunities to share what your church has to offer, reframe the conversation from “we have” to “you will be able to…” In marketing and public relations, this is often referred to as “reader-based” writing. It’s a helpful church marketing tool.

For example:

At Second Christian Church, you’ll be an integral part of an active community of Christian believers. You and your family can choose from one of three services — a traditional service, blended service, or a contemporary service. The worship music provides a rich flavor for each service, but the intent in every meeting is to praise, honor and worship God the Father. Pastor Chris preaches during all three services. His sermons are engaging and challenging, and they are always anchored on the truth of God’s Word. There are 10 adult Sunday School classes, so you should have no problem finding a place to plug in, contribute, and grow in your love for Christ. And you’ll quickly learn that your children are valued and loved at Second Christian Church. You’ll experience this at every level — from birth to college. Visit Second Christian this Sunday!

The focus of the writing is on the reader, yet it also provides openings to highlight specific strengths of the church. It reveals the opportunities people will have if they visit and join the church. It engages them and helps them see how they can be a part of the community, how they and their families will fit in with the culture of the church.

Have you audited your marketing materials and your website lately? Is there a lot of “we we” that can be changed to be a bit more engaging for your audience?
