Church Marketing: Do you know your audience?

One of the keys to effective church marketing is this: Know your audience.

So who is your audience?

I’ll be honest with you, when I’m sitting in the crowd and the band is playing and the preacher is preaching, I get caught up in how I’m feeling. If I don’t care for a song, I feel a twinge of disappointment in the song selection. If I perceive the message is something I’ve heard before, I might start losing interest and let my mind wander.

In those instances, I’ve made myself — a born-again Christian — the audience.

Yes, I need the worship time. Yes, I need to hear the Word. And yes, I need the fellowship, the small group study, and I enjoy the coffee and donuts.

But am I the audience? Are you?

Maybe. Or maybe not.

Change the scenario a bit. If Jesus was speaking at your church, who would he be talking to?

In Mark 2:16-17, we get a glimpse:

When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw [Jesus] eating with the “sinners” and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and ‘sinners’?” On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

When I read that, I realize it’s not about me anymore.

It’s about my obedience to Christ and His example to love and serve others — to reach out to those who don’t know Him yet.

They are the people who make up our audience.
