Whether to talk about the weather

I need help from my fellow church marketing pros.

As we’ve discussed in a number of posts, most of our church marketing opportunities can be found in regular, everyday conversations.

Every morning I ride the elevator to the seventh floor of our office building. Most mornings I am on the elevator with someone I don’t know — or someone I only seem to see when we’re riding the elevator together.

Frankly, I feel like I’m becoming the “It sure is a pretty morning!” guy everyone wants to avoid. I smile, say hello and make eye contact.

But the topic of weather is getting old. Especially in Texas. It’s always hot.

I need a new line of conversation.

Any ideas?

  1. I did pretty well this morning on the elevator with “Good morning” and “How is everybody?” but then, due to the awkward silence after the first stop, I couldn’t help myself. I said, “Pretty foggy out there this morning.” Ugh. Failed again.
