Perception is reality.
Have you heard that?
It’s true. As long as one person believes something about you, it’s truth. At least to that person.
It happens with churches. Here’s an example.
My first impression of the Baptist church (at the age of 9) was that it was full of rich people who liked to show off their latest jewelry and talk bad about the Catholic Church (which I attended at the time).
I held firm to that belief for 13 years until I met my wife and we began attending an incredible small Baptist church whose members lived and breathed the Gospel.
Isn’t it amazing how a single visit to a single church at the age of 9 shaped my beliefs about an entire denomination for more than a decade?
How is your church perceived?
Are you the rich church? The active church? The church of servants? The helpful church? The church for young people? A charitable church? The church where all the doctors go? A giving church? A white church? A black church? A Bible-believing church? A contemporary church? A traditional church? A Bible-sometimes church? The church with the great softball team? A judgmental church? A politically charged church? A radical church? A worshipful church? A stagnant church? A Christ-centered church?
Let me ask … Are you a dying church?
What’s your reputation?
Once you know, you have a point of reference that allows you to stop or make changes or gives you the confidence to keep moving forward.
